Bernie Klouda was a fifth-generation Alaskan—he graduated from Anchorage West High School in 1964 and from the University of Montana Pharmacy School in 1974 after serving in the U.S. Army. He opened Bernie’s Pharmacy in 1980 as a part of a vision to maintain a professional atmosphere and to provide services that were beyond the scope of the “Chain” Pharmacy. He took particular care in developing a business that patients felt comfortable with and confident about the continuity of care that the Pharmacy provided after visiting their Doctor. Over the years, Bernie has provided the opportunity for Pharmacy students to complete their intern rotations at Bernie’s Pharmacy, mentoring many Pharmacy students and new Pharmacists.
Today, Bernie’s legacy is alive and well thanks to the establishment of The Klouda Foundation. Since 2015, pharmacy students have benefited from scholarships. Bernie’s Pharmacy also gives back to the Anchorage community, supporting the American Cancer Society, the Jewish Cultural Center, Rotary International, and other community organizations. Bernie’s Pharmacy is a mentor and preceptor to pharmacy students, and his vision and legacy are further maintained through our ongoing relationship with the College of Pharmacy at University of Alaska Anchorage.
